AI dictionary for work
Grounding
Giving AI source material to work from.
What it means
Grounding means anchoring the AI in real source material — a document, your notes, a webpage — instead of letting it answer from memory. The answer is then based on something you can check.
Why it matters at work
Grounded answers are far safer than recalled ones. The simplest grounding is to paste or upload the source and tell the model to use only that.
Beginner mistake
Asking a general question ("what does the law say about X?") instead of supplying the actual policy or contract and asking about that.
Example prompt
Using only the policy pasted below, answer: how many days of notice does an employee have to give? Quote the relevant line.
