Make AI ask you questions first

The one idea

Sometimes you do not know what to put in a prompt — you only know what you need at the end. The fix is to flip it around:

"Before you write anything, ask me up to three questions that would most improve the result. Ask them one at a time."

The model is genuinely good at knowing what it is missing. Let it gather the context instead of guessing.

When to reach for this

• Your request is open-ended (a plan, a difficult email, a proposal) and the blank page is the problem.
• A first attempt came back generic — that is the classic sign the model filled the gaps with averages.
• You suspect context is missing but you are not sure which.

If your request is already specific and you have given the facts, you do not need this — just ask.

Make it comfortable

Ask for the questions one at a time. A wall of seven questions feels like homework; a short back-and-forth is easy, so you actually answer properly. And stop once it has enough — when the questions stop changing the outcome, tell it to go ahead.
