A system prompt is a set of background instructions that shape how the AI behaves across a whole conversation — its role, tone, rules, and boundaries — separate from each individual message.
Why it matters at work
In tools like Claude Projects or custom assistants, the system prompt is where you put standing instructions: "You are our brand editor; write in plain English; never invent statistics."

Re-explaining your role and rules in every single message instead of setting them once as standing instructions.
