Call the bank safely

Lesson 2 of 10 in If Money Is Gone — The First 24 Hours

The one idea

After fraud, the phone call itself can be the second attack. Fraudsters seed their own numbers everywhere a panicked victim might look: inside the scam SMS ("call our fraud line"), in fake missed calls, in sponsored search results. Call one of those and you will reach a calm, professional "agent" who finishes the job.

Compare:

The scam SMS ends with "Fraud dept: 087 XXX XXXX". Victim calls it. The "agent" verifies identity by asking for card number and OTP.

versus

Victim ignores every number in every message, turns the bank card over, and calls the number printed on it. Boring, safe, over.

The safe-number hierarchy

In order of trust: the number printed on your bank card; the number inside the official banking app; the number on the website you typed yourself. Never trustworthy after fraud: numbers in SMSs or emails (even real-looking ones), numbers from search ads, numbers a caller gives you, and callers themselves — if the "bank" phones YOU about the fraud, take a reference, hang up, and call back on the card number.

During the real call, write down three things: the time, the agent name, and the reference number. Every later step — complaint, records request, ombud — will ask for them, and "I reported it at 15:42, reference FRD-88213" is the sentence that anchors your entire case.

Try it now

Do the physical drill: take out your bank card, find the fraud/lost-card number on the back, and save it in your phone as "FRAUD — [bank]". If you bank app-only, find the support number inside the app now and save that.

Your win today

You reach the bank through ink and app, never through messages. Time, name, reference — written down every call.
